For use in making and manufacture of an array of cosmetic and beauty products.
Polyoxyethylene 20 and Sorbitan monooleate is a versatile emulsifying agent commonly used to blend oil and water. This dark yellow to brown viscous liquid serves as an essential component in various formulations, offering reliable performance across a range of applications.
With a specific gravity of approximately 1.02800 at 25°C and a refractive index of around 1.46800 at 20°C, this ingredient provides consistent quality and stability. Its high flash point (> 230°F or > 110°C) ensures safety in handling and processing. The Gardner color value is 6.9, and it exhibits a hydroxyl value of 40.9, a saponification value of 89.9, and an acidity value of 0.7. When dissolved in water at 5%, the pH stands at 7.5, indicating neutral properties. Additionally, the free dioxane content is minimal at 0.2%.
Polysorbates, including Polyoxyethylene 20 and Sorbitan monooleate, are surfactants produced by reacting polyol (sorbitol) with ethylene oxide. The numeric designation in polysorbates indicates the average number of ethylene oxide moles reacted per mole of sorbitol. The resultant polyoxyethylenated sorbitan is then further reacted with fatty acids from vegetable fats and oils such as lauric acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, and oleic acid.
This family of surface-active ingredients, based on mono-esters of Sorbitan (a corn-derived sorbitol derivative), can be tailored by bonding with fatty acids, typically from palm oil. This process creates a range of low HLB (Hydrophilic-Lipophilic Balance) ingredients that primarily act as emulsifiers, historically known under the ‘SPAN’ trade name. By ethoxylating the mixture, the HLB increases, enhancing the ingredients water-loving capacity and making it more effective as a solubilizer. This category, known as Polysorbates, has been traditionally referred to by the ‘TWEEN’ trade name, with variations in their HLB due to differences in the size and shape of their hydrophobic tails. Generally, the heavier the fatty acid tail, the lower the HLB, making it less suitable for use as a solubilizer in water-dominant systems.
